What is the first thing that comes to our mind when we think of box office movies, red carpet and glamorous award ceremonies?
Undoubtedly, we will have an image of a glamorous female actress looking oh-so immaculate, sashaying down the red carpet.
Have we ever once recognized let alone remember female directors, filmmakers or even animators?
Sadly, female filmmakers still aren’t getting the same recognition or opportunities that male counterparts do.
It is a known fact considering that huge award ceremonies such as Academy Award, Cannes Film Festival, and Golden Globe Awards were not spared from this disparity.
Well, rather than exploring the possible reasons for such differences, instead we shall dive into the captivating life of movie making with incredible women who have made and broken the boundaries of film and animation.
Once again, it is with great honor to have yet another inspiring SheSays session at our JustCo premises, the largest coworking space in Singapore.
As the setting sun in the distance casts lengthening shadows over the event space, intense discussion about female creators’ position in the entertainment industry and the challenges, trials, and tribulations faced by these talented individuals.
Jacqui Hocking (Documentary Filmmaker and Founder of Vision Strategy Storytelling), Charlotte Worthington (Programme Leader of Puttnam School of Film & Animation, LASALLE), Carlene Tan (Former Studio Head of One Animation), CheeK (Chief Content Officer of Media Company, Director of Chicken Rice Wars), Vicky Chen (Founder and Festival Director of Cartoons Underground) made up the creative panel who shared their honest experiences and advice to aspiring female filmmakers and animators.
The evening was incomplete without a healthy dinner from Do Si Rak and indulging in a glass (or two) of wine from Bottles XO.
The take away for that evening was that age and gender does not matter at all in this industry. Besides having the passionate creativity, the courage to put themselves out there, one should not forget the beauty of collaborations. A good team whom one can sync beautifully and able to trust is important.
It’s easy to give in to feelings of self-doubt and back down from challenges. When it comes to leveling up one’s life, doing something is almost always better than nothing.
Fellow go-getters were pumped up after the adrenaline-fueled inspiring session.
